To help neurosurgeons overcome this predicament, Dynamic Light scientific Founder Professor Andrew Dunn, along with CEO Len Pagliaro, and Co-Founder, David Miller, leveraged their knowledge, experience and research expertise in the biomedical space to found the company and revolutionize the approach towards blood flow monitoring. Dunn’s pioneering research in the field of laser speckle imaging is the winning factors that spurred the conception of Dynamic Light. “The technology developed by our team employs the principle of dynamic light scattering to generate speckle images that serve the purpose of non-invasive, continuous, real-time, quantitative blood flow visualization,” says Dunn.
Neurosurgeons prefer imaging tools whose outputs are as accurate and precise as possible. Leveraging Dynamic Light’s ‘Speckle View™’ technology helps them achieve non-invasive, high contrast, pseudocolored images which are considerably more informative and accurate than existing ICG angiography techniques. While ICG angiography images provide surgeons with a brief, transient assessment of whether there is blood flow or not, Dynamic Light’s technology enables them to gain quantitative and continuous knowledge of blood flow. In comparison with other imaging solutions in the market, what sets Dynamic Light apart is their unique, patented algorithm, and software platform, which integrates seamlessly with thousands of systems that are already in use by thousands of hospitals.
Furthermore, Dynamic Light’s Speckle View technology eliminates the requirement of any form of dye or injection, which minimizes risks and reduces operating room time, and also gives surgeons better perception of blood flow in tissue. Additionally, Dynamic Light’s software is powered by powerful algorithms that enable real-time processing on widely available laptop-type computers—a capability that can be extensively used for preclinical research as well as clinical procedures with surgical operating microscopes.

The Speckle View Imaging Technology developed by Dynamic Light is modular in its design and consists of an integrated set-up involving a red laser, a digital camera, and the patented software, which performs the image processing that reveals the blood flow images. To capture the blood flow, all that surgeons need to do is to illuminate the surgical field with harmless laser light, and capture video images with a camera. The software offers automatic, dynamic visualization control which further simplifies the physicians’ task. In instances where clients want to use their own cameras and illumination, Dynamic Light can provide the software as a standalone product. Microscope manufacturers can also adopt the software as an add-on to their product line. “We are in discussions with companies that already have installed surgical imaging platforms upon which Speckle View technology can be licensed and used with little or no hardware modification,” mentions Pagliaro.
With an expert internal team , Dynamic Light is looking forward to working hand-in-hand with neurosurgical microscope companies by integrating their software onto the client’s platforms, thus bringing valuable additional capabilities to those systems. Along with solving present limitations, the company offerings are designed to facilitate next-generation surgical support, by incorporating augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and machine learning capabilities into their technology suite, which will enable it to be used in a broad variety of surgical procedures and future applications beyond surgery.
